In brief: What is the structure of hair and how does it grow? InformedHealth org NCBI Bookshelf

hair structure

In conclusion, understanding hair structure is like getting a key to a treasure chest. Have you ever wondered why your friend’s hair can be so different from yours, even though you use the same hair care products? Well, that's because everyone’s hair has unique traits like thickness, curl pattern, and color.

Nerves

The cell membrane complex mainly consists of lipid mono- and bilayers. The corresponding scattering features correspond to a lamellar periodicity of about 45 Å, and rings at spacings of about 4.3 Å, characteristic of the order within the layers (Busson, Engstrom & Doucet, 1999). Both these features are observed in the 2-dimensional X-ray data of all individuals in Fig. 1, as a ring-like scattering intensity at q-values of ∼0.1 Å-1 and a broad, ring-like scattering at ∼1.5 Å-1 as a result of the lipid order within the membrane layers. The corresponding diffraction signal has a maximum on the qz-axis, indicating a preferential orientation of the membrane plane parallel to the surface of the hair. The hair shaft comprises a cortex, surrounding cuticle cells, and sometimes a central medulla found in thicker hair.

Assignment of common scattering signals

The Small Angle X-ray Scattering (SAXS) profile was well fit with three Gaussian peaks at 90 Å, 45 Å, and 27 Å. We note that the third peak was not observed in all hair samples. The corresponding peak positions and distributions are shown in the figure. The 90 Å peak has been reported early in the literature as the distance between intermediate filaments in human hair. Also here, the standard deviations of 90 ± 2 Å, 47 ± 2 Å, 27 ± 1 Å, as shown in the figure, are small, indicating that the organization of the intermediate filaments on the nanoscale varies very little between different individuals. Next is the telogen or resting phase of the hair cycle, in which the hair follicle is dormant, and growth of the hair shaft does not occur.

Bulge

Hair in areas that have been waxed consistently is known to grow back finer and thinner, especially compared to hair that has been shaved with a razor. Hair grows everywhere on the external body except for mucus membranes and glabrous skin, such as that found on the palms of the hands, soles of the feet, and lips. I have a thyroid issue and because of that my hair started falling out, and I have a couple of almost bald spots. I tried different products trying to cover them, and eventually started thinking about getting a wig. Everything I saw online looked very cheap but luckily I found Daniel Alain website, and bingo - I finally saw a wig that I was looking for. I scheduled a consultation with Tracy Romo who explained the whole process in details.

hair structure

How much of each hair type you have varies from person to person and also depends on your age and sex. About 30 percent of the body’s surface is covered with terminal hair in women, compared to about 90 percent in men. Contraction of these muscles causes the hairs to stand on end, known colloquially as goose bumps. A filament made of tightly packed, keratin-filled keratinocytes that grows out of a hair follicle in the dermis of the skin.

The three features above were observed in all individuals in Fig. The underlying molecular structures will be quantitatively analyzed in the next section (Quantitative analysis of scattering results). We note that additional features are seen in some of the measurements in Fig. 1, mainly in the broad membrane ring at around 1.5 Å-1 which indicates a difference in molecular composition of the cell membrane complex between individuals. It is a long-standing question whether changes in the molecular structure of nail or hair can be related to certain diseases and potentially be used as a diagnostic tool. Such a technique would in particular be interesting and relevant as simple, non-invasive screening method for cancer (James et al., 1999; Briki et al., 1999; James, 2001).

Finally, during the telogen phase, the hair follicle is at rest and no new growth occurs. At the end of this phase, which lasts about 2 to 4 months, another anagen phase begins. The basal cells in the hair matrix then produce a new hair follicle, which pushes the old hair out as the growth cycle repeats itself. Hair typically grows at the rate of 0.3 mm per day during the anagen phase. Hair loss occurs if there is more hair shed than what is replaced and can happen due to hormonal or dietary changes.

It allows light to pass through easily when it is straight, but it impedes the passage of light when it is kinked or coiled. This is indirect evidence that UV light may have been a selective agent leading to the evolution of curly hair. One hypothesis for the loss of body hair in the human lineage is that it would have facilitated cooling of the body by the evaporation of sweat. Humans also evolved far more sweat glands than other mammals, which is consistent with this hypothesis, because sweat evaporates more quickly from less hairy skin. Another hypothesis for human hair loss is that it would have led to fewer parasites on the skin.

Outer root sheath (ORS) extends from the epidermis at the infundibulum and continues to the hair bulb and its cells change considerably throughout the follicle. In the infundibulum, it resembles epidermis, whereas in the isthmus level, ORS cells begin to keratinize in a trichilemmal mode. Keratinocytes in the ORS form the bulge area at the base of the isthmus.

To do this, we first have to understand the complexities of our hair, how it grows and why for many of us, it falls out. Hair anatomy 101 starts with the base structure of the hair — it's composed of the hair bulb and the hair shaft. Most of what we know about our hair structure is surface level.

Hair follicles are made up of many different components, but these are the four key structures. As presented in this chapter, hair is a complex organ in constant interaction with its surrounding environment. During the first months of life, its anatomy and growth pattern diverge significantly from those of adult hair. The mechanisms of xenobiotic incorporation are closely related to hair cycling and melanogenesis, and the interpretation of the concentrations, often complex, must take into account these aspects. Simplified scheme of melanogenesis occurring in melanocytes during the anagen phase. In the direction along the hair fibre axis (qz), there are two major peaks that were consistent among all subjects, one narrow peak around 5.0 Å and one broader peak around 4.3 Å.

At the isthmus level, epithelium keratinization begins with the lack of granular layer named “trichilemmal keratinization” [14, 16]. Only few differentiated corneocytes remain and the invagination of the epidermis in this area must be considered as highly permeable for topically applied compounds [19]. Hair follicle stem cells are thought to reside in the bulge area on the isthmus close to the insertion of the arrector muscle [20].

These signals are related to the coiled-coils arrangement of the keratin proteins in the cortex, the formation of intermediate filaments in the cortex, and lipids in the cell membrane complex of the hair. Statistical analysis of the corresponding molecular dimensions revealed a rather small distribution between different individuals. These general properties of human hair are observed in all hair independent of gender, colour or optical appearance of the hair (as listed in Table 1) within the number of individuals included in this study. The outer root sheath (ORS) has been recognized as a ready supply of multipotent stem cells that differentiate into several cell types, including melanocytes and keratinocytes. More specifically, these stem cells are thought to reside in a distinct bulge area located between the insertion of the arrector pili muscle and the ductal opening of the sebaceous gland.

Catagen

Hair is present on almost the entire surface of our body, excluding certain regions such as the palms of our hands, soles of our feet, and some genital areas. In certain places, hair is so small that it is virtually invisible to the naked eye and in other places it is quite obvious, like on our head and in our armpits. It explains how it grows, what it’s made of, and how it changes. Hair grows slowly, about half an inch per month, nourished by blood vessels around the follicles. Each hair starts in a follicle, which functions like a mini factory under the skin, producing hair cells. When it comes to hair structure, it's a little like an onion; it has layers, each with its own special job.

hair structure

Human Biology

The hair follicle is comprised of layers of cells that work together to support and form the hair shaft. The cutaneous vascularization is ensured by arterioles that ascend into the dermis, forming a plexus that supplies the cutaneous structures and in particular the hair follicle. These arterioles are particularly concentrated in the lower part of the hair follicle and form a rich anastomotic network connected by cross shunts in contact with the papilla. A second capillary network is located in the sebaceous gland. These two networks are connected by a parallel system of larger vessels that descend along the sides of the follicle. 5 and and6,6, we identify three features present in all individuals.

The Growth Cycle

Reproduced from ref. 12 with permission from Elsevier, Copyright 2022. We note that in order to maximize the scattered signals, the entire hair strand was illuminated in our experiments using a relatively large X-ray beam. By illuminating selective parts of the hair, the occurrence of the signals that we observed can be determined as a function of their location within the hair in future experiments. It is interesting to note that differences are observed for the fraternal twins in Fig. This finding is in agreement with the expectation that individuals with similar genetics would share similar physical traits such as hair structure.

Loose areolar tissue

Cells of the hair matrix divide and differentiate to form the layers of the hair. The innermost layer of the hair follicle contains cells which become keratinised to an extent, forming the medulla. Surrounding the medulla, there is a keratinised layer of cells called the cortex. The third cell layer of the hair follicle is also keratinised, forming a cuticle which is thin but hard. These overlap creating a structure that supposedly prevents the hair from becoming matted.

The rest of the hair, which is anchored in the follicle, lies below the surface of the skin and is referred to as the hair root. The hair root ends deep in the dermis at the hair bulb, and includes a layer of mitotically active basal cells called the hair matrix. The hair bulb surrounds the hair papilla, which is made of connective tissue and contains blood capillaries and nerve endings from the dermis (Figure 1). The molecular structure of the hair samples was studied using high-resolution X-ray diffraction, which covers length scales from molecules up to the organization of secondary structures. Despite the relatively small number of individuals (12) included in this study, some conclusions can be drawn.

During periods of stress, more hair enters the telogen phase and begins to fall out. Humans shed anywhere from 50 to 100 scalp hairs a day, but stress can cause a noticeable amount of hair loss. The skin of the scalp is highly innervated with blood vessels and sensory receptors known as Pacinian corpuscles. The corpuscles are egg-shaped and comprise many concentric rings of tissue layers. They are innervated with a free nerve ending and therefore work as deep pressure receptors to external stimuli. The cuticle is the outermost layer formed by flat overlapping cells in a scale-like formation (Robbins, 2012).

The rest of the hair is anchored in the follicle and it lies below the surface of the skin. The hair root is enveloped by the hair follicle which is a skin appendage that lies deep in the dermis of the skin. The hair shaft is the visible, nongrowing portion of a hair protruding from the skin. This part of the hair is not anchored to the hair follicle.

Biology of Human Hair: Know Your Hair to Control It

Vellus covers every part of the body except the palms of the hands, the soles of the feet, undersurfaces of the fingers and toes, and a few other places. The hairs of the scalp, eyebrows, and eyelashes are of separate types from these others and develop fairly early in life. On the scalp, where hair is usually densest and longest, the average total number of hairs is between 100,000 and 150,000. Human hair grows at a rate of about 0.5 inch (13 mm) per month.

When the cuticle is not intact, moisture escapes and the hair becomes dry. The cuticle's overlapping scales also protect the hair and add to its strength. Just like a plant needs the right soil, water, and sunshine to grow, your hair needs the right nutrients and care to stay strong and look great. At Fully Vital, our dedicated team has worked tirelessly to unlock the potential for healthier, fuller hair – no matter what stage of life you find yourself in. Fully Vital's products target these key areas, making sure your hair gets the love it deserves—right from the core. So, every layer has a role in keeping your hair healthy, looking its best, and feeling its best.

Additionally it is possible, and quite normal to have more than one kind of hair type, for instance having a mixture of both type 3a & 3b curls.

Like other proteins in the body, keratin is also a large molecule made up of smaller units called amino acids. The amino acids are joined together in a chain, like beads on a string. It has three distinct layers, and is made up of amino acids (proteins) held together by chemical bonds.

At the end of anagen, mitotic activity of the matrix cells is diminished and the follicle enters a highly controlled involutionary phase known as catagen. Catagen lasts approximately 2 weeks in humans, regardless of the site and follicle type [37]. During catagen the proximal of the hair shaft is keratinized and forms the club hair, whereas the distal part of the follicle is involuted by apoptosis [16, 38]. Hair shaft synthesis and pigmentation only take place in anagen [11]. The degree of axial symmetry within the hair bulb determines the curvature of the final hair structure [35].

These cells take place in certain functions of the follicle such as acting as a sensory organ and serving as an immunologic sentinel for the skin [5]. Note the both the internal and the external sheaths are continuous at their base with the papilla. This explains why the quality and appearance of the hair is dependent on the health and well-being of the dermal papilla. The external root sheath of a hair follicle is continuous along with the epidermis. The most important one of these glands is the sebaceous gland, which produces and secretes the natural oils lubricating hairs, namely sebum.

The hair follicles are tubular structures, having a base (hair bulb) that surrounds the hair papilla. During the growth phase, an extra outer layer (stratum basale) appears. Hats and coats are still required while doing outdoor activities in cold weather to prevent frostbite and hypothermia, but the hair on the human body does help to keep the internal temperature regulated. When the body is too cold, the arrector pili muscles found attached to hair follicles stand up, causing the hair in these follicles to do the same. These hairs then form a heat-trapping layer above the epidermis. The opposite actions occur when the body is too warm; the arrector muscles make the hair lie flat on the skin which allows heat to leave.

The T’zikal Deep Hydrating Shampoo is an effective Ojon oil shampoo for hydrating dry and damaged hair.

Testers reported that it lifted limp strands, was easy to brush out and didn’t irritate the scalp. Just be aware that it could leave visible residue on hair if not rubbed in properly. John Frieda's lightweight mousse was a stellar performer in the GH Beauty Lab volumizing mousse test. In the Lab, it was the best at maintaining hair fullness over time, even through humid conditions. Testers echoed Lab results and reported that the delicately scented foam did not leave hair feeling sticky or greasy, although a few noted that it may leave hair feeling stiff over time.

Certain brands will offer storage solutions, including bags, cork containers, metal containers and self-draining bar storage. Also, consider avoiding formulations that contain additives that might irritating to the scalp and inadvertently cause dryness or itchiness, such as harsh chemicals, dyes, and fragrances. Instead, seek out those that have been dermatologist-tested, says Dr. Shaver. This one lends fine hair a touch of weightless nourishment, so you can use it on its own. However, add in the coordinating kaolin-infused conditioner and you'll really notice a boost in body.

The shampoo offers heat protection up to 450 degrees, so you don’t have to weigh down fine hair with yet another product. What distinguishes shampoo for hair growth is the inclusion of certain ingredients that are known to promote scalp and hair health, says Levine. These ingredients are intended to prevent breakage — thereby allowing the hair to grow longer — while also nourishing the scalp and hair follicles to support growth. This formula packs three of the most important ingredients for hair growth — collagen, peptides, and keratin — and due to the concentrated formula, the bottle will last you twice as long. It also works for all hair types — including color-treated and chemically-treated hair. This potent formula boasts scalp-stimulating green coffee oil, copper peptides to promote hair growth and biotin — a hair-strengthening B vitamin.

Look for products with biotin, collagen, amino acids, peptides and niacinamide. "These ingredients are key for overall hair health to keep the individual hair follicles strong and thick," Dr. Ziering says. Gutterman is also a fan of biotin and recommends castor oil and aloe vera as well as they "work great for general hair health."

Volumizing shampoos can help make hair appear fuller and thicker since they typically contain fewer conditioning ingredients, so they’re less likely to weigh hair down. To find the formulas that really work, our scientists evaluate hair thickening and volumizing shampoos both in the Lab and on consumer testers. Based on rigorous testing by the GH Beauty Lab and insights from hair experts, these are our picks for the best hair thickening shampoos of 2022. The Maple Holistics Argan Oil Shampoo restores the hydration, shine, and health of the hair. This therapeutic-blend shampoo contains all the natural oils with botanical keratin to give maximum nourishment to dry, frizzy, damaged, thick, and rough hair. This sulfate-free formula contains nourishing oils like argan, avocado, peach kernel, jojoba, and almond oils.

Color-treated hair can be tricky to work with, as ingredients like sulfates and surfactants can strip moisture levels and color. The R+Co Dallas Biotin Thickening Shampoo will keep your hair as fresh as the first day you had it done. Moringa seed extract, biotin, and saw palmetto berry extract work hand-in-hand to give hair volume that rivals even the top salon blowout. The formula excludes mineral oils, parabens, sulfates, and gluten, so you know it's working to keep color-treated hair vibrant and full of bounce.

Therefore, you may go for shampoos that contain yogurt powder and other botanical oil blends. They nourish your hair, strengthen the roots, and repair any damage to the shafts. However, steer clear of ingredients that you are personally allergic to, even if they are natural. The Alterna Caviar Anti-Aging Smoothing Anti-Frizz Shampoo has been meticulously crafted to address the specific needs of mature hair.

To promote hair health and thickness, Marjan uses non-damaging hot tools, sleeps with a silk pillowcase, utilizes heat protectants, and brushes her wet hair gently with a tool designated for the task. Individuals with fine or thin hair will find the affordability of the OGX Thick & Full Biotin & Collagen Shampoo unbelievable, especially considering the quality of the formula. Biotin, collagen, and wheat protein work to strengthen hair strands over time, leading to fuller-looking locks with continued use. Unlike some other shampoos, this one won't weigh your hair down and is perfectly safe for color-treated hair. Ginseng has been proven to encourage hair growth, so there’s no question why it’s the superstar ingredient in this thickening shampoo.

We rounded up expert-recommended shampoo bars, NBC Select staff favorites and highly rated bars that align with our experts’ guidance. The detoxifying formula helps remove sebum, oil, and other buildup like minerals and pollutants from your scalp, which encourages healthy hair growth in the long term. The Nioxin shampoos are most effective paired with their accompanying conditioners and scalp and hair treatments. With a handful of Ruggeri’s highlighted ingredients like biotin and saw palmetto, it’s no surprise that this uber-volumizing shampoo landed on my list. While the biotin works to increase hair strength over time, the saw palmetto berry extract creates a thicker feel almost instantly. While that’s typically a no-go for fine hair, I promise it’s super lightweight, won’t weigh your hair down, and gives you a shiny finish. To select the best shampoos for thick hair, we first took into account each product’s active ingredients—we carefully evaluated each ingredient list and ultimately chose formulas that cleanse, hydrate and nourish.

Ginger King, a New Jersey-based cosmetic chemist and founder of Grace Kingdom Beauty, also recommends looking for shampoos that tout their "styling" capabilities as they work more like styling hairsprays. These shampoos typically contain what King refers to as film formers, which are ingredients like acrylate copolymer. "There are also silk proteins and keratin proteins that can help to add a moisturizing layer for hair to look thicker," says King.

Virtue Flourish Shampoo for Thinning Hair

The active ingredient in Rogaine, Minoxidil, is the only FDA-approved over-the-counter topical ingredient for the treatment of hair loss. Containing 5% of the active, this lightweight foam helps stimulates hair growth and slows down hair loss. Consistent application is key for best results — and any results do take time and patience — so be sure to thoroughly read and familiarize yourself with the directions before use. Thankfully, the top shampoos for thinning hair outlined below are bursting with ingredients that can boost volume, thicken strands, and possibly improve hair density for the long haul.

But according to the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health, there’s not enough research on the effects of saw palmetto to say if it definitely works for hair loss or thinning hair. She will try pretty much any shampoo she can get her hands on, which means that there are at least five or six different options in her shower at all times, including many of the ones featured on this list. We tested this fragrance-free shampoo from Nécessaire in our NYC lab and gave it high marks for its gel-like consistency, great lather, and ability to reduce scalp irritation. This light, clarifying shampoo is one of our favorite ways to splurge on our hair.

In the Lab, the swatch-wash station is used to regulate water temperature and flow rate, then dispense exact doses of shampoo onto human hair samples of different textures and types. After the shampoo and conditioner pair are applied and rinsed, the Instron machine (left) is used to determine their conditioning ability in a test of combing force through wet hair. This violet-tinted Kristin Ess shampoo is a go-to of GH's blonde editors for toning their strands.

Nioxin Cleanser Shampoo System 1 was a top choice among our experts, who praised its use of proteins, amino acids, and antioxidants for strengthening hair. Dr. Garshick notes that if used with the full Nioxin System 1, this shampoo makes the perfect base for an effective hair and scalp treatment. However, even using the shampoo alone had us swooning over our thicker, fuller hair. The powerhouse ingredients made our hair more voluminous and shiny, leaving our hair and scalp feeling clean and refreshed. It was so effective that we noticed less breakage and hair fallout from the first shower. While thinning hair can be a shock to the system, everyone experiences hair loss to some extent.

Whether you've always had fine hair or are experiencing thinning due to stress, hormonal changes, or aging, over-the-counter hair thickeners can add volume, body, and fullness to your hair. If you have curly or coily hair and often use a lot of products to style (or wash weekly or biweekly), this is a great choice to clear out buildup while promoting growth and thickness. Melanie Rud is a Chicago-based writer with 10 years of experience covering beauty.

Kenra Professional Volumizing Shampoo

Everyone experiences hair fallout (it's normal to shed anywhere from 50 to 100 strands per day), but if you regularly lose clumps of hair or notice patchiness on your scalp, it could be hair loss or thinning. "These signs may indicate miniaturization of the hair follicle, leading to permanent hair loss," explains board-certified dermatologist Suneel Chilukuri, MD. "As we age, the size and shape of the follicle changes and can shrink, which results in thinner hair,” she explained. This is also a great budget pick, as you’ll get a lot of washes from just one bottle. It lathers and spreads through hair easily, and we only needed a small amount each time. If you have tight curls or coils, you can rest assured that this shampoo will rinse out easily, too.

Working overtime to lift your roots and add all-day body—while protecting your hair from heat and UV rays—this thickening spray has a well-deserved fan following. Aveda's vegan Invati shampoo is especially suited to those with oily roots and flat hair. It's formulated with salicylic and lactic acids to gently exfoliate the scalp, removing congestion from around the follicles. An Ayurvedic blend of ginseng, amla and turmeric stimulates the scalp (and provides a delicious fragrance).

Stylists and experts are inundated with questions about how to get thicker hair, especially with the increase in hair loss since the pandemic (22 percent of women reported hair loss after having COVID). While hair growth can be a lengthy process, it really starts in the shower with the best hair products. Unfortunately, the terms volumizing and thickening are often used interchangeably, despite their distinct differences. Both shampoo types "may contain ingredients that adhere to the strands and are designed not to rinse out—giving the hair a temporary feel of thicker, fuller hair," Marjan says. That is why it is crucial to read the product label in detail to understand the expected benefits.

You might also see options with castor oil or essential oils, which can help nourish the scalp and help hair grow in fuller. If a nourishing option is what you're looking for, consider the Qhemet Biologics Castor & Amla Nourishing Pomade. With texturizing sprays (Ouai has a great option) and powdery formulas, you'll want to look for thickening agents like silica silylate and starchy ingredients like maltodextrin or silk powder. According to The Ordinary, this leave-in treatment is best used right before bed. The concentrated, no-nonsense formula contains redensyl and procapil, breakthrough ingredients shown to improve hair density, stimulate the scalp, reduce shedding, and promote healthy growth. Made specifically for folks with thin, fine hair, the volumizing formula leans on saw palmetto to expand your hair and pump it with soft volume. It's also infused with biotin to strengthen strands and increase shine.

Color-protecting shampoos and conditioners are also tested on dyed hair samples for their ability to prevent hair color fading after 20 washes and 10 hours of UV exposure using a Spectrophotometer. In the GH Beauty Lab most recent three shampoo and conditioner tests, 16,063 data points were tallied in total. At less than $2 (!) per bottle, you can’t find a better drugstore bargain that really works than this classic clarifying shampoo from Suave, which is why it also earned a spot as the best shampoo for oily hair. Clarifying formulas are powerhouse cleansers, delivering the most purification and easily removing oil and dirt (because of this, they can be drying).

The unique blend of aloe vera juice with coconut oil helps condition hair and reduces itchiness and hair damage. The formula kills dandruff with MVP-level antifungal pyrithione zinc, all while breaking down oils and product buildup that leads to limp hair with strong cleansers. FYI, though, it can be a bit drying, so limit use to once a week and coat your ends in a rich conditioner and leave-in product afterward. The company has six hair-thinning solutions, with System 1 targeted to natural hair with light thinning.
